The Owls are heading to the northern hemisphere, with Siokapesi Palu Sekona, Tania Naden and Faitala Moleka all named in the Wallaroos' 32-player squad for the WXV Global Series. The squad departs for the UK next week, with Australia set to face England, France and Scotland in Europe before returning home for two further Tests against Scotland in Sydney and Canberra. It is a massive tour and a huge opportunity for the Wallaroos to test themselves against the best sides in the world. Pesi continues as one of the squad's most experienced and important figures, bringing 28 caps and the Wallaroos captaincy to the campaign. Tania Naden adds her 30 caps of international experience to the front row, while Faitala Moleka brings her 31-cap international pedigree to the backline. Three Owls with genuine world-class credentials, representing Australia on the biggest stage in women's rugby. Director of Women's High Performance Tim Walsh has made clear that this tour is about closing the performance gap on the world's best, with a clear eye on the 2029 Rugby World Cup on home soil. What a moment to be part of. Three Owls have been named in the Wallaroos squad for Australia's historic 100th Test match against New Zealand in Auckland on Saturday 22 August, and we could not be prouder. Siokapesi Palu Sekona, Tania Naden and Faitala Moleka have all earned selection in what is a landmark occasion for Australian women's rugby. The 100th Test is a milestone that deserves to be celebrated, and having three Owls on the park for it makes it all the more special for our community. Pesi continues her remarkable stint as Wallaroos captain, leading the side in one of the most significant Tests in the program's 32-year history. Tania brings her trademark power and experience to the front row, while Faitala adds her creativity and skill in the backline. The match will be played at Auckland on Saturday 22 August and is live on Stan Sport. The Owls are going gold this weekend, with three of our own named in the Wallabies matchday 23 to face Japan in Osaka on Saturday night in the first Test under new Head Coach Les Kiss. Charlie Cale is the headline story, returning to the Wallabies jersey for the first time since 2024 following a period on the sidelines with injury. It is a tremendous comeback story, and having come back strongly this season to nail down his spot in the Brumbies squad, his recall to the Wallabies is a fitting reward for the hard work he has put in to get himself back on the field. He comes off the bench for what will be a memorable occasion for the Owls loose forward. Allan Alaalatoa starts at tighthead prop, continuing his remarkable international career and bringing his experience and physicality to the Wallabies front row as he has done so many times before. Billy Pollard is also named among the replacements, adding to his growing Test cap tally and continuing to cement his place in Australian rugby. It was a proud night for the Uni-Norths Owls at the 2026 ACT & SNSW Rugby Union Awards, with two of our own taking home individual honours and Sam Mickelson narrowly missing out on the competition's top prize. Claudia Obst shared two major awards on the night, claiming both the Premier Women's Highest Try Scorer and Premier Women's Highest Point Scorer alongside Gungahlin Eagles' April Downey. The two were locked together all season in what was one of the great individual battles of the 2026 competition, and it is fitting that both players were recognised equally. For Claudia, it is richly deserved recognition for a season of outstanding attacking play that lit up the Premier Women's competition from start to finish.

What a night for the Owls at the ACT Brumbies Annual Awards Night at Hotel Realm on Wednesday, with three of our own taking home well-deserved recognition for their outstanding contributions to the 2026 season. Pesi Palu Sekona claimed the Best Forward Women's award, a fitting tribute to another dominant season from our captain and one of the premier players in women's rugby in this country. Pesi's leadership, physicality and influence on the Brumbies Women's program throughout 2026 was there for all to see, and this award reflects the respect she commands from everyone in the game. Toby Macpherson was awarded the Shawn Mackay Most Outstanding Young Talent award following an impressive breakthrough season in the Brumbies squad. Toby has developed enormously this year and this recognition is a wonderful acknowledgement of the work he has put in and the talent he continues to show at the top level. Rhys Van Nek, alongside Lily Bone, was recognised with the Community Engagement Award, a reflection of the character that anyone who knows Nekky will be entirely unsurprised by. The Owls family extends its heartfelt congratulations to Patrick Coffey, who has been named in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours, receiving the ACTSES Emergency Services Medal. The medal recognises Pat's service, which exemplifies the highest ideals of the ACTSES. His distinguished record, unwavering availability, and dedication to training, mentoring, and operational excellence has directly contributed to the development of the ACTSES into the professional organisation it is today. Known affectionately as 'the Scrum Doctor', Pat is a much-loved part of the Uni-Norths Owls Junior Rugby Union Club family and one of only two of the club's Life Members. It was a weekend of heartbreak and glory for the Owls at Viking Park, with two sides going down in tight contests while the 2nd Grade produced a stunning performance to book their place in the 2026 Spence Cup Grand Final. The 4th Grade gave everything in a brutal contest against the Royals but fell agonisingly short, losing 18-17 in one of the closest games of the finals series. Tries to A. Hemsworth, W. Cattle and A. Rixon, with S. Burns converting, had the Owls right in the hunt until the final whistle. It was a heartbreaking end to what had been a tremendous finals campaign from this group. The Colts faced a powerful Gungahlin Eagles outfit and ultimately went down 42-20 in a tough contest. Tries to P. Shepherd, T. Byrne and A. Gardner, with Gardner also converting and slotting a penalty goal, showed real fight from the Owls, but the Eagles proved too strong on the day. But what the 2nd Grade produced was something special. Running out 40-31 winners over the Queanbeyan Whites in a high-scoring and enthralling contest, the Owls were simply brilliant. Tries to J. Gardner, Z. Hoskin, V. Mafi, F. Burrows, S. Seti and R. Parsons, with C. Crozier converting five, was a performance full of class, energy and intent. Gungahlin were on the attack again from the restart, adding to the scoreboard with a Sam McLachlan penalty to shoot out to a 10-0 lead. Though the Royals would respond with a try to hooker Tom Hedley midway through the first half, closing the deficit to 10-7. Both sides would trade penalty goals before the Eagles swung the match back in their favour. Scrum half Lachy Smith sniping on the edge of the ruck to increase their lead to 18-10. The Eagles had an opportunity to add to the scoreboard after the siren with a set piece off the scrum. Though it was Royal’s fly-half William Johnston who read the Eagles attack, pouncing on an intercept for a converted try. The Royals heading to the halftime break with a spring a step, despite being down 18-17. It was a tough outing for Canberra Royals in the second half with the Eagles dominating possession and territory for much of the first half. With the Owls digging deep in contact, the would be rewarded for their efforts when back Tusigaigoa Junior Liva crashed over after a barnstorming run. The Royals lost a player to a yellow card after an infringement at the ruck. They would steady the ship to close out the match with a successful penalty goal. The Royals earning a week's rest with a 38-7 defeat against the Owls. The Uni-Norths Owls survive another week when they play the winner of tomorrow's First Division Second Grade Elimination Final between Tuggeranong Vikings and Gungahlin Eagles. The Vikings would make use of their home ground advantage early as the side would score just two minutes into the match through Wally Wentzel after some hard running play among his forward pack found an early linebreak. Gungahlin would then get on top and steadily find a lead after two back-to back tries. The Vikings however would claw their way back to a half-time lead with a try at the 35th minute. The Vikings would stretch their lead out once again, scoring just two minutes into the second half. Alex Powell of Gungahlin would strike back just six minutes later however as the Eagles hoped to keep the match in range. Despite a late comeback effort attempt and a try on the buzzer Tuggeranong would just claim the match by one point and advance to the Grand Final. Both sides were evenly matched for the opening stanza, till Anthony Luchetti broke the deadlock with a 5-pointer for the Owls. The Lions enjoyed possession for a short period of the first half, but found themselves a man down due to foul play. The Owls taking advantage of the advantage to pile on 20 unanswered points with tries to Riley Sellars and a second 5-pointer to Luchetti. Story keeping a clean sheet with the Owls up 27-0 at the main break. Wests got themselves back in the game immediately at the resumption when Rohan Murphy crashed over down the right edge. The Lions were full of running and started to dominate possession and territory when centre Desmond Faigafa dove over for West's second try of the afternoon. Despite their dominance in the second half, the Lions were unable to overcome Uni-Norths. The Owls scoring late through substitute Marcus Burrell and flyhalf Thomas McGain to advance to the First Division First Grade Grand Final with a 39-10 win over the Wests Lions at Viking Park. A hard fought battle from the opening whistle in the Spence Cup Qualification final as Uni-Norths Owls did incredibly well to go into halftime at just a 19-8 defect. With the amount of good ball Gungahlin had in the opening 40, the scoreline certainly could have been much worse off win Uni's case. That being said, Gungahlin's grit his what keeps them where they want to be on the field, making the Owls fight for every inch of territory. In the last quarter of the match however a Cameron Johns try would reignite the Owls as they would make a push to close the gap riding their momentum wave. After absorbing plenty of pressure Gungahlin would eventually get back on the attack and secure one final try that would secure them a ticket to the Spence Cup Grand Final. The ViQueens dominated possession early on turning the weighted possession into points when back Tijana Zdravevska scooted down the left flank to score under the posts. Though Gungahlin would hit back through Samantha Chikirov after numerous raids on the ViQueen's line. The Eagles closing the gap with the score at 7-5 with minutes remaining. The home side had other ideas with time running down to halftime when Wallaroo Tubua Tuinakauvadra powered through the Eagle's defence. The ViQueens going into halftime with a tight 12-5 lead. Tuinakauvadra got the second half underway when the ViQueens turned over the ball for the back-rower to muscle her way down field for her second. The Eagles returned serve when they marched down field. Gungahlin rewarded with Angel Kavaliku-Skinner crashing over near the posts. Though it would be Tuinakauvadra snuffing out any chance of a Eagles fight back when she rolled through for her third of the match to take the score out to 24-12. Tuggeranong closed out the match when Zdravevska scored her double for the afternoon. The ViQueens advancing to the 2024 Premier 15 Grand Final in a fortnight, taking down the Gungahlin Eagles 31-12 at Viking Park on Saturday afternoon. Tuggeranong ViQueens 31 (Tries: Tubua Tuinakauvadra 3, Tijana Zdravevska 2; Conversions: Siena Edwards 2, Merania Pareone) def. Gungahlin Eagles 12 (Tries: Samantha Chikirov, Angel Kavaliku-Skinner; Conversions: Olivia Scott) Match 6: John I Dent Cup (Tuggeranong Vikings v Canberra Royals) The Tuggeranong Vikings have taken down the Canberra Royals 34-28 in this afternoon's John I Dent Cup Qualification Final at Viking Park, Wanniassa. The Vikings have now paved their way to the competition decider while the Royals will play in next weekend's preliminary final as they attempt to get another chance against the Tuggeranong side. The Tuggeranong Vikings enjoyed a fast start to the match when backrower Keynan Tauakipulu barged over the line. Scrum half Ryan Lonergan converting the extras to skip the home side to a 7-0 lead after 3 minutes. The Vikings continued to pile on the pressure with the Royals camped in their own half. With ball in hand, Tuggeranong march upfield, with the Royals giving way to a 5-pointer to No.8 Justin Sikimeti. Lonergan making no mistake to push the score out to 14-0 inside 10 minutes. However the Royals played themselves back into the match when they started to build on possession and momentum. The Vikings were unable to put up with constant goal line pressure, with Royal's forward Rory Scott beating two defenders to stretch out for his side's first. Captain Pedro Rolando closing the gap with a conversion to trail the Vikings 14-7 midway through the first half. The match turned up a notch when the Vikings broke free from the Royal's stranglehold. Tuggeranong centre pairing Joe Wadman and Junior Time Taotua breaking through the Canberra defence with some clever interplay to put fullback Koki Takeyama into space. Takeyama taking advantage of an overlap created by his outside backs for Henry Palmer to dive in the left corner. Lonergan unable to add to the tally from out wide with Vikings building a 19-7 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the half. Both teams unable to add to the scoreboard with the Vikings missing a tough penalty conversion opportunity before the halftime siren. The Royals got themselves back into the grind early in the second half which paid dividends for the blue baggers as they were able to convert their grit into points in the 54th minute through Jarrah McLeod. With Rolando adding on the extras Royals were back in the chase at 19-14. Royals momentum was short lived however as Vikings midfielder Junior Time Taotua would make full use of a short ball from teammate Baden Godfrey as he would crash onto the pass and cruise to the try-line. Going try-for-try Royals would cross next as after a dominant maul from the side would coast 15 metres all the way to the white stripe, adding to their tally by seven after another conversion effort. Tuggeranong would then show their class with the ball in hand as the Williams would decide a scrum of halfway was a perfect chance to show off Palmer's speed once again. Toeing ahead a grubber from halfway, Palmer would blitz the competition to collect the ball first and score yet another Tuggeranong try. Desperately trying to claw their way back into the match, the Royals would be camped on Tuggeranong's line relentlessly attempting to crash their way over. After plenty of pick and drive efforts coming up just short, a one off pass from Rolando would find Zac Ross who was able to plant the ball down. Converted once again, the Royals would still have a shot with a 34-28 deficit with five minutes in the bank. Royals however would come up just short as Tuggeranong would hold them out to clench the win. The boy from Bowral. The man of many talents. He Started his Owls life as a skilful and elusive 10, the man felt something was missing. He yearned for more action. More contact. So, he shifted his gaze to the engine room. While he’s still a solid 10 in my books, he now spends his days folding scrums, running it straight and smoking any poor fool who has the gall to run at him. He’s a bloke who will put his hand up for any carry, in any grade, and be a presence both on and off the field. He’ll back you into a ruck, and he’ll be there for you with a schooner. JCF has been through the highs and lows with the club. Enduring some tough times, leading teams into finals contention, and eventually being part of a premiership-winning team. Mate, you’ve earned every cap. Well done. It’s been a pleasure to share the field with you on so many occasions, my little general. And I’m bloody glad I get to do it with you for your 100th. Congratulations on 50 caps mate! It has been a pleasure getting to know you as one of my first mates in Canberra with Owls and college to now still playing in the same team and living together. Getting to 50 caps so quickly is a testament to your commitment to the club and your perseverance in a tenure that has spanned from a winless colts season through to a successful second grade season this year. Rommy, Rom, Rom-Dog, Romilda FINALLY makes her 50th Owls club game appearance! Joining the Club in 2019, Rom quickly became a player worth watching. Bringing impact in WXV’s even after backing up from a full game of 10s just minutes earlier, she has always found a way to make her presence felt on the field. Some would think that with her constant backing up between the two grades, this milestone would have been reached years ago -and they’d be right! But after taking a hiatus from Owls, joining QBN Whites and dipping her toe into league, Rom made her much-anticipated return to the Owls scene this year. What started as a call-up for injury cover with the promise of minimal minutes quickly turned into a starting position, full game minutes, and stepping up when the team needed her most. Rom embraced the challenge with the same enthusiasm, pride, and commitment she has always brought to the club. A true utility player, Rom’s grit and willingness to do whatever the team needs is what makes her such a valuable part of the squad. Whether she’s asked to learn a new role, or called upon when the team is short, she never hesitates, she just gets stuck in and gives it absolutely everything. Her strong carries, work ethic, and ability to make an impact wherever she plays are a testament to the player she is. What a day at Viking Park last Sunday. Three out of four Owls sides fought their way through the Elimination Finals to book their place in this weekend's Preliminary Finals, setting up another massive occasion at Viking Park this Saturday. 4th Grade got the day underway in style, running out convincing 31-12 winners over Goulburn to advance comfortably. Colts followed with an impressive 36-24 victory over the Royals, showing tremendous character and composure throughout. 2nd Grade then produced the nail-biter of the day, edging past the Royals in a tight and tense contest, 25-24, to keep their season alive in the most dramatic of fashions. The Premier Women's XV fought hard against the Wests Lionesses but went down 22-18 in a close and competitive contest. Their 2026 season comes to an end, but they can be enormously proud of everything they built this year, particularly given the number of new faces who came into the squad at the start of the season. Now the focus turns to Saturday, with three Owls sides back at Viking Park for the Preliminary Finals. Win and we are in the Grand Final, the stakes could not be higher. Uni-Norths Owls Rugby Club is pleased to confirm that Head Coach Lachie Creighton, 1st Grade Assistant Coach Mick Burrows and 1st Grade Manager Matty Kay will continue to lead our Senior Rugby Program into the 2027 John I Dent Cup season. Western Districts Lionesses 22 – 18 Uni-Norths Owls | Elimination Semi Final | Viking Park In a match that had everything, the Uni-Norths Owls Premier Women's side bowed out of the 2026 season in the cruellest of fashions, falling 22 to 18 to the Western Districts Lionesses in the elimination semi final at Viking Park. The Owls led for large portions of the contest, fought back from behind twice, and were pressing with a two player advantage in the dying minutes, only to be denied at the death in a finish that will live long in the memory of everyone who witnessed it. OWLS MAKE THE PERFECT START The Owls were the better side from the opening exchanges and made their dominance count. In the 16th minute Charlise Cleary capitalised on a fortunate break at the breakdown to race away and score, Maronay Smuts unable to convert but the Owls leading five points to nil and full of energy. Six minutes later the Owls struck again, Claudia Obst, their danger woman all afternoon, received the ball wide and produced a moment of individual brilliance, slipping past one defender and shrugging off several more before crashing over to double the Owls' advantage to 10 points to nil. The Lionesses had work to do, and responded before the break when Stanberg crossing over to make it 10 to 5 at halftime, the conversion falling short but Wests firmly back in the contest heading into the second 35 minutes. A DRAMATIC SECOND HALF The Lionesses emerged from the break with renewed purpose and within five minutes had drawn level. Stanberg crossed for her second try of the afternoon from a similar move down the open side, the conversion again unsuccessful, and at 10 points all the contest was perfectly poised. What followed was a ferocious arm wrestle. Neither side could break the other's defensive line until Maronay Smuts was shown a yellow card in the 49th minute for a high tackle on Fogamanono Tusiga, leaving the Owls temporarily down to 14. Remarkably, the Owls used the period to build pressure themselves, and when they earned a penalty under the posts, Madeleine Gogala stepped up with ice cool composure to slot the three points and restore the Owls' lead at 13 to 10. The Lionesses hit straight back, Tusiga, who had been the target of the earlier tackle, crossed to hand Wests the lead before Jane Morrison raced away to score after a superb offload from Allie Booker, Faaaloala Luafitu converting to push the margin out to 22 to 13 with time running short. THE LATE CHARGE The Owls refused to accept their fate. Pressing hard into Lionesses territory, they earned a yellow card against Tusiga for an intentional infringement, and with the Lionesses down to 14, Molly White dived over in the corner in the 67th minute to bring the score back to 22 to 18 with three minutes remaining. Smuts could not convert but the Owls were in full flight and the finish line was within sight. Wasting no time off the kick off, the Owls charged straight back into Lionesses territory, inching closer with every phase. The pressure told when hooker Sina Neli was sent to the bin for a high tackle, leaving the Lionesses with just 13 players on the park. The Owls had two players more, the clock was ticking, and the try line beckoned. But it was not to be. A tackle from Grace Sullivan forced a spill at the critical moment, the ball was turned over, and the final whistle confirmed a 22 to 18 victory for the Lionesses. THE TAKEAWAY This one will hurt for a long time. The Owls led going into halftime, fought back twice from behind in the second half, and had a two player advantage in the final minutes with the try line in sight. That they were denied in such dramatic and heartbreaking circumstances is a cruel way to end what has been a season of genuine growth and progress for this group. Obst was brilliant throughout the season and produced another standout performance today. Cleary and White both crossed in crucial moments, and Gogala's composed penalty goal under pressure was a moment of real class. The Owls competed until the very last second and gave absolutely everything they had. To the players, coaches and everyone who backed this group throughout the 2026 season, thank you. The Barn will be louder than ever next year. Uni-Norths Owls 31 – 7 Tuggeranong Vikings | Round 17 | ANU North Oval What a way to close out the regular season, on Students Day at The Barn, the Uni-Norths Owls Premier Women's side produced a dominant and thoroughly convincing 31 to 7 victory over the Tuggeranong Viking, with Claudia Obst once again the star of the show. Four tries from the Owls fullback capped a remarkable individual season, and the win confirmed the Owls' place in the finals as they head into the elimination semi finals next Sunday. OWLS SET THE TONE EARLY The Owls were intent on sending a statement from the first whistle. Obst crossed in just the fifth minute to get the home crowd on their feet, and Maronay Smuts converted superbly to make it seven points to nil. The Vikings hit back through Paua-lee Going in the 24th minute, Siena Edwards converting to level the scores momentarily, but the Owls quickly reasserted their authority. Annabelle Mickelson crossed in the 28th minute off a maul to restore the Owls' advantage, and then Obst struck again in the 31st minute, Smuts adding her second conversion of the afternoon to push the score to 19 to 7 at halftime. The Owls had been the better side throughout the first 35 minutes and carried genuine momentum into the break. OWLS PULL CLEAR IN THE SECOND HALF The second half was all Owls. A raft of changes at halftime did nothing to disrupt the rhythm or intent of the side, with Obst completed her hat trick in the 49th minute to push the advantage further. She was not done there, in the 54th minute she crossed for her fourth try of the afternoon, Smuts converting for the third time to seal a commanding 31 to 7 victory and send the Students Day crowd home thoroughly entertained. The Vikings had no answers for the Owls all afternoon, and the home side defended with equal discipline to keep the visitors scoreless in the second half. THE TAKEAWAY Four tries for Claudia Obst in the final regular season game is a fitting exclamation mark on what has been a stunning individual season for the Owls fullback. Smuts was equally impressive with the boot, converting three from five, Mickelson added a well taken try, and the Owls delivered a performance full of confidence and purpose heading into finals football. The Owls finish the regular season in fourth place and will face the Western Districts Lionesses in the elimination semi finals next Sunday at 1:50pm at Viking Park. Uni-Norths Owls 31 – 72 Tuggeranong Vikings | Round 17 | ANU North Oval On a lively Students Day at The Barn, the Uni-Norths Owls brought the curtain down on their 2026 regular season in front of an enthusiastic crowd that gave this group the send-off they deserved. The Tuggeranong Vikings were ruthless and clinical throughout, but the Owls showed the spirit and determination that has defined their season, scoring five tries and finishing the match on their terms with two tries in the final five minutes. The scoreline does not tell the full story of what this group has given to the 2026 season. HOSKIN AND MACPHERSON GET THE OWLS GOING The Vikings came to The Barn with intent and made their presence felt from the opening exchanges. Lington Ieli crossed at the 3rd minute, Pelasio Samuelu Niuula converting, before Andrew Robinson added another at the 7th minute to give the visitors an early 14–0 advantage. The Owls hit back at the 13th minute through winger Zander Hoskin, Cameron Kirsten converting beautifully to make it 14–7 and give the Students Day crowd something to cheer, The Barn was alive and the Owls were in the contest. The Vikings, however, continued to press, Samuelu Niuula crossed at the 20th minute, converting his own try, before adding a penalty goal at the 18th minute to extend the lead. An injury to William Trostel at the 23rd minute saw Ryan Middleton come on to replace him, and the Owls were forced to reshuffle as the Vikings continued to build their advantage. At the 28th minute, number eight Tobias Macpherson crossed for a try to keep the Owls in touch, Kirsten's conversion unsuccessful, before the Vikings added another through Fletcher Rose at the 33rd minute, Samuelu Niuula converting to push the lead back out. The Owls refused to let their heads drop. At the 38th minute, hooker Fletcher Burrows powered over the line for a well-taken try, Kirsten's conversion unsuccessful, but the Owls had shown fight and the crowd roared their appreciation. Samuelu Niuula slotted a penalty goal right on half-time to send Vikings into the break leading 30–17. VIKINGS PULL AWAY IN THE SECOND HALF The second half saw the Vikings at their most clinical, with Samuelu Niuula in particular putting on an individual display that was difficult to contain. Samuelu Niuula crossed at the 42nd minute, again converting his own try, before an injury to Oscar Cleary at the 48th minute brought Billy Hansen into the fray. At the 53rd minute, number eight Eli Langi crossed for a try, Samuelu Niuula converting, and the Vikings continued to extend their advantage through Silas Pilot at the 58th minute, Samuelu Niuula again converting. Further tries to Samuelu Niuula at the 64th minute and Pilot again at the 67th minute, both converted, pushed the score to a commanding margin. At the 55th minute, the coaching staff made a triple change, bringing on Te Huia Kutia for David Kirk, Liki Chan-Tung for Fletcher Burrows and Charlie Crozier for Harvey McLean, injecting fresh energy across the park. An injury to Liae Tuilagi at the 68th minute saw Polynesia Crichton come on, with Vaotangi Mafi also entering the field for Rhys Van Nek as the Owls managed their squad through the closing stages. Tavita Loughland crossed for the Vikings at the 72nd minute, Samuelu Niuula converting, before a yellow card to Moeaki Toma at the 79th minute gave the Owls the final word at The Barn. OWLS FINISH WITH SOMETHING TO SHOW With the crowd still present and the Students Day atmosphere doing its best to lift the mood, the Owls made sure they finished with the last points of the day. At the 76th minute, Chan-Tung crossed for a try, Kirsten converting, before Macpherson crossed for his second try of the afternoon right at the 80th minute, Kirsten converting to complete the scoring. Two tries in the final five minutes gave the Owls something to take from a difficult afternoon. THE VERDICT The Vikings were outstanding on the day and Pelasio Samuelu Niuula produced one of the individual performances of the season. For the Owls, Tobias Macpherson finished with a brace, Fletcher Burrows added another try to a fine personal season, Zander Hoskin showed his class early and Liki Chan-Tung crossed late off the bench, while Cameron Kirsten was reliable with the boot throughout. It was a difficult way to close out the regular season, and the Owls will know they were well below their best on the day but this group has shown throughout 2026 what they are capable of, and there is plenty to build on heading into the off season. It is with very deep regret that Uni-Norths Owls Rugby Club acknowledges the sudden death of John 'Ace' Fely following several years of living with cancer. John is a stalwart of the club having played for Norths in the 1980's and 1990's. He was a skilful hard running centre and was renowned for his fearsome tackling. John grew up in Wahroonga in Sydney before becoming a boarder at Kinross School in Orange. John represented NSW Rugby Country Schools in 1982 before moving to Canberra. He returned to the merged club in 2019 to take on the role of Secretary. A role which he held with distinction for 6 years. Apart from ensuring the smooth running of the club, John will be remembered for his passion for building community within the club. No better examples of this, are his leadership in the raising of $40,000 for the Tongan village of Kanokupolu (which had been devastated by the 2022 tsunami), the creation of a medical fund for Owls players who had been injured in the course of the season and the introduction of the “Employee Assistance Program” allowing club members to access free confidential counselling. John will be remembered for his positive attitude, generosity of spirit and love of the club. He did so much in the background, most of which would not have been seen by the broader club community. John was a doer and actively pursued the club's goals with gusto and passion as he did in his personal life. John was always positive and grateful for the incredible support he was receiving from his wide circle of friends and in particular his rugby community. The Owls will be poorer for his passing. Our thoughts are with Jayne, sons Ben and Matt and the Fely family.

Uni-Norths Owls mourns the passing of Brett James Odgers OAM, one of the true founding figures of University rugby in Canberra. Brett passed away in 2026 at the age of 86. Brett was there at the very beginning. In 1959, when the Canberra University College Rugby Union Football Club was little more than an idea among a group of enthusiastic students, later Brett was elected its first ever President. The Canberra Times recorded that the brand new club had won two of their three matches at their very first seven-a-side carnival, playing in borrowed Grammar School jerseys with Brett himself scoring three tries on the day. The following year brought the club's finest early triumph. Brett was part of the University Under 18 side that won the 1960 Grand Final, defeating Canberra Royals 11 points to 9, the first ever Grand Final victory by a University side in the ACT competition. Beyond rugby, Brett went on to become a deeply respected figure in Canberra public life, and in 2026, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of his service to the Canberra community, particularly in the areas of history, heritage and planning. It was a fitting acknowledgment of decades of sustained contribution. The Canberra Times described him as a man whose life was closely interwoven with the city itself. At the centre of Brett's life, however, was his family. He is survived by his wife Jean, his children, Hayley and Rowena and 5 grandchildren. For everyone connected with the Uni-Norths Owls, Brett represents something precious, the spirit of those who build something from nothing. See obituary here

29 November 1940 – 27 January 2026 The recent passing of Jim Ferguson was sad and unexpected. Jim has maintained a strong work ethic for his entire life, remaining an active advocate for sport in the ACT and for Australia. Jim played a significant role in the development of the Australian sport system in the lead up to the 2000 Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games. He was the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) from June 1990 to December 2000, playing a significant role in the development of the Australian sport system leading up to the 2000 Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games. Jim was reputed to be a calm leader in a period of significant change. He was willing to listen to the expertise of those in sport. This period was not without challenges including the significant expansion of the AIS in Canberra, staffing freezes of the newly elected Howard government and an inquiry into AIS gymnastics. Regarding Jim’s departure from the ASC in December 2000, ASC Chair Peter Bartels said “Jim’s contribution to the development of sport in Australia is immeasurable. The level of excellence now reached and the international standing of Australian sport is the best testament to Jim’s time at the ASC”. Prior to his appointment to the ASC, he had a 20 year career (1966-1986) in the Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including the role of Ambassador to Peru between 1981 and 1983. His career in federal government sport administration commenced with his appointment as Head of the Tourism and Sport Division, Department of Arts, Sport, the Environment and Tourism in 1986. After leaving the ASC, Ferugson was actively involved in a number of sporting and government organisations, including that of President of ACT Rugby Union and the President of the China Australia Sports Association. He was also a board member of the Australian Tourist Commission, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the World Youth Soccer Cup, the World Masters Games, and Boxing Australia (2010-2022). After leaving the ASC, he decided to write a book about his time leading the ASC, ‘More Than Sunshine & Vegemite: Success the Australian Way’, which was published in 2006. This book importantly documents the development of the Australian sport system in the decade leading up to the Sydney Games. In the final chapter, Lessons for the Future, Jim wrote ”The Australian Sports system must continue to take risks, to live at the edge. After all, that is where the excitement is. It will be hard to maintain our levels of success. But it is achievable” He left a legacy that all at Owls Rugby can heed and act upon. Jim played prop with ANU Rugby in the early 1970s and was the club president in the late 1980s before moving to manage the ASC. He remained a loyal and regular spectator over the years, being part of the passionate Owls crowd at the 2025 1st Grade grand final win. Jim was awarded Life Membership in 1993 in recognition of his significant contribution to the administration and governance of not only ANU Rugby but to sport in general.

Wests Lionesses have booked their spot in the BentSpoke Premier 15s Preliminary Final after surviving a chaotic late assault from a spirited Uni-Norths Owls outfit, clinging on for a heart-stopping 22-18 victory despite finishing the clash with just 13 players on the park. Uni-Norths made the early running, opening up the scoring in the 16th minute when fullback Claudia Obst carved open a gap on the far side of the pitch. While Wests' Faaaloala Luafitu quickly pinned her down and pilfered the ball, confusion at the breakdown saw the pill drop fortuitously into the hands of Owls outside centre Charlise Cleary, who raced away down the far edge to score. Maronay Smuts could not convert, but the Owls were humming at 5-0. Five minutes later, it was the Owls women on the hunt yet again. After trucking it up the far side ruck after ruck, they swung the ball wide to the open side to their danger woman, Obst. The flyer impressively slipped past one defender and palmed off three more before crashing over the whitewash to double Uni-Norths' tally to 10-0. Spurred on by the deficit, the Wests women marched their way up the open side with bruising intent. Uni scrambled with gritty, desperate defence, but the Lionesses bided their time before shifting the ball out to the blind side for fullback Emily Stanberg, who dived over for their first points of the afternoon. The conversion went astray, but the chase was well and truly on as both sides headed into the break with Uni holding a 10-5 lead. Wests emerged from the sheds full of determination. Just five minutes into the second half, the Lionesses found themselves camped metres out from the Owls' try line. Relentless phase play down the open side created the opening, and they turned the ball wide once more for Stanberg to crash over for her second try of the day. The conversion was unsuccessful, but the contest was locked at 10-all. A ferocious arm wrestle ensued, with both sides unable to penetrate each other's defensive line until the maroon outfit strung together a piercing attack that saw loose forward Fogamanono Tusiga tear towards the Owls' try line. In their scrambling defence, Tusiga was cut down high by Uni scrumhalf Maronay Smuts, earning the number nine a trip to the sin bin. Despite the player disadvantage, Uni stormed up the field with phase after phase. The Owls repeatedly tested the Wests line before earning a penalty directly under the uprights, allowing Madeleine Gogala to step up with composure and slot the three points for a 13-10 lead. Minutes later, Wests delivered an immediate response. Unable to crack the defensive wall through close-quarter phase play, they sent the ball to the open side to Tusiga, who dotted it down to hand the Lionesses the lead. With the clock ticking down and ball in hand, Wests mounted one final assault, swinging play across the park before flanker Allie Booker spotted a gap and offloaded to her captain, Jane Morrison, who raced away to score. Luafitu nailed the conversion, extending the margin to 22-13. Desperate to close the deficit, Uni mounted a late surge towards the Wests try line, where an intentional infringement saw Tusiga sent to the bin. Exploiting the player advantage, the Owls sent the ball wide along the far side of the pitch to winger Molly White, who dived over in the corner to bring Uni back into the fight at 22-18 with three minutes remaining. Wasting no time, the green and blue outfit charged straight back into Wests territory off the kick-off, inching closer ruck after ruck. Wests' discipline frayed under the pressure, resulting in another yellow card for a high tackle as hooker Sina Neli was dispatched to the bin. Yet despite having a two-player advantage, the Owls were denied at the death when a tackle from Grace Sullivan forced a spill, bringing a gruelling assault to an end. ACT Rugby has published its finals preview ahead of this weekend's elimination finals, and the Owls women feature prominently in the writeup. The article notes that the Owls started the 2026 season with a largely new-look squad packed with newcomers. Despite the rebuild, they opened strongly, pushing the Gungahlin Eagles close in Round 2 and defeating the Western District Lionesses in Round 3 to claim the Women's Territory Cup. Consistency proved elusive through the middle of the season, but the Owls finished strongly with the return of several Brumbies and Wallaroos players to bolster the squad heading into finals. The player to watch nominated for the Owls is Claudia Obst, who has been in career-best form this season, locked in a battle for the competition's top try-scoring honours. Her five-try performance in a Round 10 win over the Royals posted the competition's best individual haul of the season. Congratulations to our Owls Premier Women's team after a second half surge were able to secure the Podiatry Professionals Cup, for the first time, from the West Lionesses.

The final round of the regular season is done and the Owls have sent it out with another strong collection of performances across the grades. The Round Seventeen weekly honours make for a fitting close to what has been a remarkable season of individual recognition. Taking out Player of the Week for the second time this season is Claudia Obst, rewarded for another brilliant display for the Premier Women's XV. Claudia has been the standout honouree of the entire 2026 season and this second individual award is a fitting acknowledgement of everything she has contributed throughout the year.

Round Sixteen brought another opportunity for Owls across all grades to put their hand up, and plenty did exactly that. The weekly honours for Round Sixteen feature a strong mix of familiar faces and fresh names, a testament to the depth this club continues to show deep into the season. Taking out Player of the Week is Lachlan Wylie, recognised for a standout performance for 3rd Grade. Lachie has been building throughout the season and this individual honour is a well-earned reward for his efforts.

Round Fifteen delivered another set of performances worth celebrating across the Owls' grades. With the season deep into its run, the competition for weekly honours is as fierce as ever and this round's recipients have all earned their recognition. Taking out Player of the Week is Declan Tancred, rewarded for an impressive outing at halfback for 3rd Grade. Declan's ability to control the game made him a standout on the day and this honour is thoroughly deserved.

In the early1960s the Latukefu family left Tonga and made their way to Canberra, a journey which would eventually see the family make their mark on areas as diverse as politics, the arts and, of course, sport, in the nation’s capital. The eldest son, Reverend Dr Sione Latukefu, was one of the first Pacific Islanders to study at ANU, completing his PhD in the mid-1960s, living at Bruce Hall during his post-graduate studies. He convinced his siblings to join him in Canberra, and when his younger brother “Bob” arrived he soon turned up at Northbourne Oval, looking for a run with Norths. “Rugby is a staple in Tonga and this transcended through all of us,” says Bob’s son Mai Latukefu, who played for Royals during the 1980s and 90s “Tongan Bob” was an exciting outside back who set the competition alight. He came to Canberra from Queensland, where he had played for the state. He had great pace, a mean step and too many opposition players took his defence for granted. He also ended up playing several representative games for the ACT before briefly returning to Tonga. In the early 1970s he returned to the district and joined up with the Queanbeyan Whites for the rest of his career. When Bob’s grandson, and Mai’s son, Uli was looking for a senior club after finishing school at Marist College he was drawn to Owls, not knowing of his grandfather’s connection to Uni-Norths. “Uli made his own decision to play for the Owls,” says Mai. “We were predominantly Royals, a bleed-blue family, but when Uli said he was going to the Owls, I wasn't surprised nor upset. “He carries my father’s name and in a funny way, from above, I thought the old man may have pushed him slightly in that direction,” Mai laughs. Mai said there was never any pressure from his father, nor his uncles, for him to play rugby. “Looking back, it just happened naturally, we were all drawn to the game. “But when it came to Uli, my wife and I wanted him to play, we made him! Uli wanted to be an actor like his uncle, who knows, he might still have time!” (Uli’s uncle, Uli is an actor and singer best known for his role as Dwayne Johnson in the NBC comedy Young Rock and film roles in Alien: Covenant and Black Adam! His other uncle Hau is an award-winning hip hop artist with the duo Koolism. Another uncle Alopi is a senior leader with experience in Australia's aid, economic diplomacy and foreign policy sectors.) Even for a blue-blooded Royals supporter, Mai recognises the great community at Uni-Norths. “There’s a great club culture and great people here at Owls. Just being at the games and seeing the respect the players have towards each other but also towards spectators and non-players, I know Uli has made the right decision. “A few boys come up to me regularly and say hello and shake my hand or wave just out of respect noting, even though I have not formally met them.” For Mai and his family Pasifika Day is a special celebration and acknowledgement of the contributions of all the Pasifika people, not only in sport, but in the wider community. “It’s also to celebrate this great country Australia, that provided our fathers and mothers with so much opportunity and choice, who welcomed us here and made this feel like a second home.” Siave Seti came to Owls in 2021 in search of that very same opportunity. Born in Samoa, he moved from New Zealand was part of the Brumbies Academy program, linking up with Owls. “Playing for Owls has always been about more than just rugby every Saturday,” Siave says, “It’s about the community and the people you surround yourself with, whether it’s on a day off from training or away from the game. It might be different for everyone, but that sense of belonging is what brings me joy and excitement every time I pull on the Owls jersey. “I know that no matter how well I play, or how much I contribute on the field, the club will never look at me any differently. That support and acceptance are what make Owls so special. For Siave, Pasifika Day is all about representing his roots. “I was born and raised in Samoa, and my parents and much of my family still live there,” he says. “Representing my culture is the least I can do to honour my family, my ancestors, and the people who paved the way for us. It’s a beautiful day to celebrate our cultures, share our stories, and express our values and beliefs with the wider club.” In January 2022 the underwater volcano of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, just 65km north of Tonga, erupted with such force the noise could be heard as far away as Alaska. The resulting tsunami sent waves as high as 20m towards the island destroying everything in their path. The small village of Kanokupolu was among the worst hit. Homes, school buildings and amenities were wiped out. A thousand kilometres away Uni Norths Owls sprung into action. The club had a strong connection to the Tongan village through Falamani Mafi, who was in the ANU team that won the premiership in 1992, as well as playing for Tonga in the World Cup in 1995. His son Junior was also playing for the OWLS. At the start of the 2022 season the club held a fundraiser (on a home game day) for Kanokupolu, raising more than $40,000. This immense effort was spearheaded by the then Club Secretary, John Fely, and fully endorsed and supported by the Committee and all the players. There were many highlights on the day especially with the attendance of the High Commissioner, Princess ʻAngelika Lātūfuipeka Tukuʻaho, the eldest daughter of the current King of Tonga. “Seeing the Pasifika community and the Owls community come together for that event made it clear that we wanted a permanent day in the calendar where we could celebrate such a strong showing of Pasifika culture within our club,” says Meilani Whittle who was one of the organisers alongside her now husband Andrew. “When we formally introduced Pasifika Day in 2023, while I was club captain alongside Andrew, it felt like a natural and meaningful step. The day also brought out stories from people who had previously played for the club with Pasifika heritage, showing us just how deeply those roots are embedded in the club.” Meilani, who has Samoan heritage, first came to Owls in 2018 as her cousin Wallaroo Tania Naden was already playing at the clubs. “I had always known I wanted to play rugby, and there was another strong connection there because my dad (Salale Salale) had played for ANU as well. With those family ties, it felt like the right place to start my journey. “From that very first season, I knew I had found somewhere special. It didn't take long for the Owls to feel like home, and it is a decision I have never once looked back on.” With a baby on the way, Meilani is spending season 2026 in the coach’s box alongside Lachlan Creighton, and she says it has been a surreal experience. “Coaching was always something I saw in my future, so when I expressed this to Lachie at the end of 2025 and he invited me to join their team, it was the easiest yes I could give and one of the best decisions I have made. “It has been a real learning curve. I am constantly absorbing new knowledge from Creighto and Chigga and the wider coaching group involved with the senior men’s Squad, but what has surprised me most is how much I am learning from the players themselves. I always knew that moving from the women's space into the men's would naturally bring a new perspective. Watching how this group communicates, develops, and performs together has been incredibly valuable.” Does she see herself as a role model for young women coming into the club? “Not necessarily, but I am very aware that younger players are always watching and learning. I try to carry myself in a way that reflects the values of the club, both on and off the field, because if even one person feels encouraged or inspired to stick around and build their own journey here, that means a lot. “I've always made a conscious effort to treat people the way I was treated when I first joined, with support, respect, and a sense of belonging. That experience shaped me, and I want to make sure it gets passed on.” She sees Pasifika Day as the perfect opportunity to nurture that philosophy. “For me, Pasifika Day is a celebration of that shared identity. I have always felt that the Owls community and Pasifika culture reflect each other in their values of family, respect, pride, and unity,” she says. “Having a day that recognises and celebrates those connections, and the ongoing presence of Pasifika culture within the club, makes me incredibly proud. “It is easily my favourite day on the calendar. To feel seen, represented, and celebrated by a club that means so much to me is something I do not take for granted. It truly means the world.” This Saturday the OWLS will again host a gala day at the Barn to celebrate the many Pacific cultures who have played with Norths, ANU, CCAE and now the OWLS - Tongan, Fijian, Manu Samoa, American Samoa, Māori, Rarotonga (Cook Islands), PNG and more. AND it all started with “Tongan Bob” Latukefu – Norths 1964-1967, ACT 1965-1966.

In a season defined by milestones, one of the most quietly significant moments in our 25th Anniversary celebrations has been the chance to go back through the archives and revisit the very beginning of the Uni-Norths story. For a number of years, Ross Walker and Dicky Neves have been leading a dedicated project to capture and preserve the history of our club, securing photographs of past players and teams, recordings of matches, and team sheets from seasons long since played. Their work is ongoing, and in this anniversary year it has produced something genuinely special, the team lists for the men's sides who took the field for the very first time under the Universities/Norths banner, drawn from the ACT Rugby Union's Rugby News from April and May 2001. It is worth noting that the club initially appeared in the Rugby News under the name "Universities," with the Uni-Norths designation taking hold from Round 2 onwards. The amalgamation, as the Rugby News noted at the time, brought together "a stronger, more youthful club" that was keen to establish itself in the Premier Division from the very first whistle. Round 1, 21 April 2001: Queanbeyan v Universities Campese Field, kick off 3pm The first match under the amalgamated banner saw the side make the trip to Campese Field to take on Queanbeyan on home turf. It was a baptism of fire, Queanbeyan made good use of their home ground advantage to win 18-14 in what the Rugby News described as "a close one." The result stung, but the scoreline told its own story about a side that was already competitive. Round 2, 28 April 2001: Unis/Norths v Wests ANU North Oval, kick off 3pm Round 2 brought the side home to ANU North Oval for the first time and it was also the first occasion on which the club appeared in print as Unis/Norths. The day had an added dimension off the field, Ladies Day was held at The Barn for the first time, drawing what the Rugby News called "a huge crowd" to the club's first home game of the season. On the field it was a mixed afternoon, the 1st Grade side were well in the contest at half time before the reigning premiers Wests, widely rated the best team in the competition that year, heavily pulled away in the second half to win 46-5. The Rugby News noted that Mick Watter, Will Glenwright and Dave Hogden were the best performers for the home side. The 2nd Grade result was a tight one, going down 13-12 after Wests kicked a penalty goal after the final whistle had sounded. The Rugby News framed it simply, "with the competition reduced to only 12 rounds this year, it will be important to get on the board as early as possible." Unis/Norths delivered, playing into a strong wind in the first half and reduced to 14 men for 20 minutes of the second, the 1st Grade side held firm to record what the club notes described as "our first ever first grade win," 27-22. Chris Madden, Dan Hannan and Will Glenwright were the standouts. The Women's Side One gap in the record that is worth acknowledging is that the women's teams from 2001 were not included in the Rugby News team sheets, so we are unable to name the players who represented the club in those first fixtures. What we do know is that the women's side made an immediate impression. The season ladder published during the year showed them as one of the team to beat and the match notes confirm a 25-0 win over Gungahlin in Round 3. If anyone from that era has team sheets, photographs, or simply remembers who was involved, we would very much like to hear from you. Twenty-Five Years On The club that ran out at Campese Field on 21 April 2001 looks different from the one that takes the field today. The grades have grown, the community has deepened, and the OwlEnvironment has become something genuinely its own. But the thread runs unbroken from those first team sheets to the present day and the names listed above are the ones it all started with.

On Saturday the 16th May a swarm of old & bold players from University Norths and the OWLS descended on the Barn to have a fantastic afternoon of nostalgic reminiscence in great company. Swapping photos, shared experiences and of course some true stories but others highly embellished that may or may not contain some semblance of the truth. Players from Norths 1986 European Tour enjoyed a great afternoon complaining about how old we all looked – some hadn’t seen each other since 1986 and were almost totally unrecognisable. It was such a successful day many are anticipating the 50th anniversary!! The Canberra dwellers are preparing to come back to the Barn for home games for the OWLS for the rest of the year and of course becoming a member of the Parliament of OWLS. Congratulations to all the 2026 Life Members - Watson Blakie, Craig Edwards Vikki Fischer, Richard Taplin, Sean Hammond and Jason (Plugga) Smith. What a crew – I estimate between them over 240 years of volunteering and participation with the OWLS.

The Uni-Norths Owls Canberra Suburban (5th Grade) have wrapped up their 2026 season, and while the ladder may not tell the full story, the spirit and enthusiasm this group brought to every single week absolutely does. It was a tough year on the scoreboard, finishing sixth in the competition with two wins and a draw but anyone who came down to watch this side play this season will know that the result was never the only thing that mattered. Week in, week out, the number of players pulling on the Owls jersey and throwing themselves into the contest with genuine enthusiasm was something to behold. The Suburban side welcomed a huge influx of new players to the club in 2026, many of them experiencing rugby for the very first time. That kind of growth is what keeps a club alive and thriving, and the energy these players brought to training and to match day throughout the season was outstanding. The scoreline does not reflect the effort, the camaraderie or the culture that this group built together over the course of the season. It reflects a team that was learning, growing and turning up every week regardless. To every player who laced up the boots for the Suburban side, thank you. We look forward to seeing even more of you back in 2027.

The Uni-Norths Owls Women's 10s have wrapped up their 2026 season, and while finals just eluded them, there is an enormous amount to celebrate from what has been a truly special year for this group. One of the most exciting stories of the Owls' season has been the growth of the Women's 10s program. The squad welcomed a huge influx of new players in 2026, many of them completely new to rugby union, and watching that group develop week on week into a cohesive and competitive side has been one of the genuine highlights of the season. The Owls were undefeated through the opening rounds of the season, announcing themselves as genuine contenders in the Suburban Conference and turning heads across the competition. That form through the early part of the season was a tremendous achievement, particularly given how many players were experiencing competitive rugby for the very first time. Competing in the Suburban Conference, the Owls finished fourth on the ladder with six wins across the season, also coming up against Country Conference sides across three Gala Days throughout the year. With the top two sides from each conference advancing to finals, the Owls fell just short of the mark this year. But the foundation that has been built in 2026 is something to be genuinely excited about.

Uni-Norths Owls Women's and Colts kicked off their pre-season preparations with a strong showing against ADFA at Kapyong Oval, Duntroon, last night. Both the Women’s X and Colts XV teams took to the field under lights, delivering solid performances. The Women’s X side played three 20-minute periods and dominated throughout, controlling possession and applying consistent pressure to secure a convincing win. Their strong attacking play and defensive effort set a positive tone for the season ahead. Colts XV followed with a four-period, 20-minute-a-half match in a tighter contest. Despite a strong challenge from ADFA, the Owls held firm, showing resilience and composure to edge out their opponents. Both matches provided valuable game time and highlighted key areas to refine as the Owls continue their pre-season campaign. With positive results, the teams will take confidence into their upcoming preparations.

Canberra Suburban Cup has unveiled their 2024 draw, alongside the Women's 10s as both competitions look forward to another strong year of community rugby. Canberra Suburban Cup will look forward to their kickoff on the 6th of April as teams will get their first taste of action for the season. Making their debut in the competition the Gungahlin Bald Eagles, will be looking to make an early statement at their home match in Round 1 against ADFA. However, the showstopper will take place in just Round 3, as Easts take on RMC in the Grand Final Rematch. Winning by 10 in the final, Easts will be aiming to further cement their dominance after beating RMC just once in 2023's regular season matches. With each team facing each other three times, in addition to three byes for each side the competition will look to be as competitive as possible across 15 rounds plus finals. The Women's 10s competition launch is also another to mark in your calendars with the season commencing on the 20th of April. All eight teams will be returning for 2024, with nobody willing to give up their piece of community rugby action. The season will hold 16 regular season rounds, where each team has the opportunity to face-off against their rivals twice, in addition to two byes for each side. 2023 premiers in ADFA will take on their Grand Final rivals the Goulburn Dirty Reds in Round 7. However, community rugby fans will get two weeks of the grudge match back-to-back as the rematch takes place in the following round where Goulburn will get their turn to host the fixture.

This tour will give our current U16s and U18s players the opportunity to experience rugby, culture and connection, further develop their skills and to build team spirit, camaraderie and morale. It is the first international tour the Uni-North Owls JRUC has organised in many years and is designed not only to attract new players to our great club, but as a part of our retention policy, it aims to give our younger players something to set their sights on and aspire to experience in future years. Uni-Norths Owls won the first-ever Andy Muirhead Shield ahead of the Safeguard Global ACT Brumbies fixture against the Crusaders last Friday at GIO Stadium. The sevens tournament, which was part of the club's First Nations Round, took place on the field of play between under-15 teams from Uni-Norths Owls, Canberra Royals and Canberra Grammar. There was a host of other activity on the night to celebrate Indigenous people, including a smoking ceremony hosted by Yerrabi Yurwang Child & Family Aboriginal Corporation and welcome to country from Indigenous elder Warren Daley. Matthew Sonter, who is on the First Nations Advisory board for Rugby Australia, praised the Brumbies for their efforts in marking their First Nations Round. "This was an amazing community-driven event, from the Andy Muirhead Shield to the smoking ceremony, the didgeridoo and the transferring of gifts to both captains before kick-off," Sonter said. "As an aboriginal person, it's nice to see our people celebrated in such a positive light. "I would also like to thank Warren Daly for the amazing welcome to country for everyone in the stadium." The Andy Muirhead Shield, named after the ACT Brumbies right wing, who is the only player in this year's Smartech Super Rugby Pacific to feature in every single minute for their team, will now take place annually during our First Nations Rounds. Played in the spirit of reconciliation, during reconciliation week, the tournament was played between Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people. Uni-Norths won the competition, with their player Emmanuel Allen winning player of the tournament. Muirhead himself presented the award, who is a role model for all people, not just Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders. At half-time, Muirhead's business Yara Co. hosted a Kick For Cash challenge, giving Adam Barnes, whose son Neville Hancock attends St Edmund's College, the chance to win $50,000. Unfortunately, both kick attempts missed.

A big thanks to all the Owls juniors and seniors who helped to make last Saturday such a fun-filled day down at the Barn. Nothing says club footy quite like a sausage sizzle and a mascot with a hot drink or a cold drink in hand. Community Connections through Community Rugby Local ACT Rugby club to raise funds for Youth and Young Adult Mental Health and Wellbeing Owls Rugby (ACT) will conduct a major fundraising effort at its home game against Royals on Saturday, 29 July, at ANU North Oval in Turner. The funds raised will contribute to Mental Health and Wellbeing programs supporting the Canberra region’s youth and young adults. Owls Rugby aims to leverage the goodwill from last year when it raised an incredible $40,000 for the village of Kanokupolu, which was destroyed by the Tsunami on January 2022. For 2023, Owls Rugby has prioritised raising funds for the local community, working with Hands Across Canberra to establish fundraising partnerships. Over recent years, the Owls have recognised the importance of mental health and well-being for its players by providing mental health counselling services for those who need them. To do this, Owls Rugby has formed strategic partnerships with headspace and Mental Illness Education ACT (MIEACT) with the aim to raise awareness and funds for the free youth-tailored mental health support and education the two organisations deliver. Funds raised will support headspace’s Youth Reference Group Regional Camp, assist with MIEACT’s program development and delivery, and The Owls Mental Health and Wellbeing programs. “Last year’s fundraising for the Tongan village of Kanokupolu was such an incredible experience for the local community and club. This year we want to highlight Hands Across Canberra’s message of embedding a culture that gives back to the local community and support emerging issues and needs’’ said Owls Secretary John Fely. “We’ve seen the impact of the last few years on young people’s mental well-being and emerging needs for support, so we know how vital free services like those provided by headspace are.” The event will kick off at Owls’ biggest home games of the year against Royals on Saturday, 29 July. There will be raffles, auctions, and the ability to make donations on the day. The Tongan community will also provide traditional Tongan food, which was very popular last year. EAP ASSIST FOR WELLBEING & MENTAL HEALTH The run around on the footy field on a Saturday might make the body sore but we probably all agree it makes the head feel great. Getting to spend time with mates and switch off from the working week for a few hours. The break or time out is important and so is working through everything that piles up from time to time. It could be work or study, friends or family commitments and when it does feel like it's a bit 'stacks on', it's good to have people to check- in with. In 2023, Uni-Norths Owls are pleased to bring back for a second season, a club-funded initiative to support well-being and mental health practices for our playing group. Here's an overview of what that means for you: Wellbeing and Mental Health Services for Uni-Norths Owls It is recognised that many players don’t have access to employer provided Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and that access to mental health and wellbeing services are limited due to high demand in the community. EAP Assist provide a range of services, including counselling, digital programs and apps. EAP Assist support Owls Players and volunteers with wellbeing with confidential phone counselling throughout Australia & overseas. They recognise that one of the most important aspects of effective counselling is for it to be provided as quickly as possible. The aim of counselling is to help resolve personal issues before they adversely impact on your mental health and wellbeing. You will see the information on the EAP Assist website does refer to workplace issues. Please don’t worry about this, as the support tools on offer are still very relevant regardless of the environment causing the concern. The range of assistance and services provided to Owls players are outlined below. Digital Programs and Apps The EAP Assist website contains an extensive range of self-help resources which all players are encouraged to access at: https://eapassist.com.au/ and enter the Owl’s allocated Helpline Number, 0407086000, when prompted. Please look at the website’s support tools under the Digital, Support and Resilience menus. The tools range from short programs to videos. Even though you might be ok, you may be able to support others needing assistance by encouraging them to use this platform. Please do not be worried about the time you spend on this website as access is unlimited for Owls players. On-line Counselling Services EAP Assist counsellors are all qualified and highly experienced. They will initially ask your name as well as that of your organisation (Uni Norths Owls Rugby Club) in order to confirm eligibility for services. Counselling services are provided at an hourly rate and charged in 30-minute increments, which will be debited from the club’s account. Players who receive counselling services will not be charged. Information obtained during counselling is confidential and will not generally be released to a third party without prior consent. The preferred method to book a confidential phone counselling appointment is online via: https://eapassist.com.au/booking-form/ - you will need to enter the Owls Helpline Number: 0407086000 to book your appointment. Wellbeing Check up If you are unsure of how you feel please access the Wellbeing Check up via: Wellbeing Check Up - EAP Assist. Following the completion of this aid a counsellor will contact you via your preferred contact method to provide immediate support, if necessary and advice. Telephone Assistance If you just want to talk with someone, possibly to discuss your concerns and possible options please call the Owls Club’s allocated Helpline Number: 0407 086 000. Access Mental Health will provide immediate help if you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If needed please call Access Mental Health on 1800 629 354 or 02 6205 1065. In the event of an immediate, life-threatening situation for yourself or anyone else, please always call ‘000’ emergency services first. This new initiative recognises that some players don’t have access to EAP services. The club has signed up to a 12-month plan and will review its benefits over this period. It may not be a perfect solution in all situations, but please remember that the club is trying to help fill a gap in mental health support.

In attendance for the Owls were President Dave Luchetti, Vice President Phil Doyle, and Head Coaches Lachlan Creighton (Men’s) and Andrew Balmaks (Women’s), alongside Team Captains Sam Mickelson and Sophie Taplin. The evening began with a pre-launch photoshoot and media commitments, with coaches and captains speaking about the season ahead and the excitement building across the competition. This was followed by the formal launch event, where representatives from each club took part in a panel discussion, sharing insights and answering questions ahead of Round 1. It was a great opportunity to showcase the strength of Premier Rugby in the ACT and build anticipation for what promises to be an exciting 2026 season. The Uni-Norths Owls Rugby Club is proud to announce Maddie Gogala and Oliver Wheatley as our Club Captains for the 2026/2027 seasons. Following a hugely successful year for the Owls, Maddie and Oliver take over the leadership reins from Emerina "Bubba" Marsh and Jordan Thompson, whose dedication and commitment have helped drive the club forward both on and off the field. The appointment reflects not only the growth of the playing group, but the continued strength of the Owls culture, one built on leadership, accountability and pride in the blue and gold. Maddie expressed her excitement about stepping into the role: “After the great Owls success of last season, it's an honour to be named club captain for the upcoming season! I'm proud of what this club has achieved over the years and am looking forward to seeing that momentum build from a new perspective! As always up the Owls HOOT HOOT.” Oliver echoed that sentiment as he prepares to lead alongside her: “Honoured to be passed the baton of club captain for the 26/27 seasons! The Uni-Norths Owls Rugby Club has confirmed its committee for 2026 following the club’s recent Annual General Meeting, with a strong mix of returning leaders and new faces set to guide the club into the upcoming season. Dave Luchetti remains President for 2026 and welcomed the depth and balance of the newly appointed committee. “I’m pleased that this year we have filled all the positions on the committee, which will allow us to continue the growth of the club and better support our players” Luchetti said. Luchetti also thanked the incoming committee for volunteering their time and commitment to ensuring a successful year ahead for the Owls. The 2026 Capital Sevens delivered everything a festival of rugby should, blistering pace, last-gasp drama, and moments of individual brilliance, and the Owls were right in the thick of it across all three draws at the Bungendore Sports Hub. Hosted by the Bungendore Mudchooks, the tournament brought together the region’s best clubs for a full day of sevens action. With the Owls fielding sides in Premier Men’s, Women’s Division, and Men’s Division 2, it was a massive showing from the club, and the Women’s side in particular gave everyone plenty to talk about. Women’s Division The standout story of the day from an Owls perspective was the Women’s Grand Final, a match that had everything. In a rematch of the 2025 BentSpoke Premier 15s Grand Final, the Owls went toe-to-toe with the Wests Lionesses in a contest that went right down to the wire. Leading for the bulk of the match, the Owls looked set to claim the title. But with the clock winding down, Wests’ Merania Paraone hauled her side back within striking distance, and in a frantic final sequence the Lionesses turned the ball over and shifted it quickly to the blindside where Allie Booker sprinted down the touchline to dot down, sealing a gut-wrenching 22–21 victory for Wests. It’s a result that will sting, but there was no shortage of pride to be taken from the performance. Owls’ Charlise Cleary was simply outstanding throughout the day, crossing for six tries and racking up 34 points to claim the Women’s Player of the Tournament award. A dominant, world-class display. Premier Men’s In the Premier Men’s draw, the Owls came up against a Tuggeranong Vikings side that proved why they’re the benchmark in the sevens format. The Vikings claimed back-to-back Capital Sevens titles with a 31–21 victory over the Gungahlin Eagles in the final. A Day to Build On Two of the three Finals on the day were decided by a single point in the dying moments, a testament to the quality of rugby on show across all divisions. The Owls Women’s side pushed the competition’s best team all the way to the final whistle, and Charlise Cleary’s Player of the Tournament performance is the kind of form that bodes well for the season ahead. A huge thank you to the Bungendore Mudchooks for hosting a fantastic event, and to all the officials and volunteers who made the day run seamlessly. The Uni-Norths Owls Men’s and Women’s teams put in strong performances at the Capital 7s gala day over the weekend, showcasing their skill and determination against tough competition. Women’s Team Recap The Owls Women’s team opened their campaign with a narrow 12-17 loss against Queanbeyan Whites. Despite a strong effort, they fell just short in a closely contested match. They bounced back in their second fixture, securing a well-earned 17-7 victory over Monaro Women’s, demonstrating their attacking prowess and defensive resilience. In their final match, the Owls faced a formidable Viqueens side. Despite a spirited effort, they went down 14-27, concluding the tournament with one win and two losses. Men’s Team Recap The Owls Men’s team started strong with an impressive 26-17 victory over Queanbeyan Whites, showcasing their offensive capabilities and structured play. Their second game saw them up against the Wests Lions, where they fought hard but ultimately fell short in a 19-29 loss. The final match proved to be the toughest test, as the Owls faced the Gungahlin Eagles. Despite their efforts, they were unable to contain their opponents, suffering a 5-38 defeat. Looking Ahead Both teams showed moments of brilliance and determination throughout the tournament. The experience gained from the Capital 7s will be invaluable as they prepare for upcoming competitions. The 2025 instalment of Capitals 7s is set to take place this Saturday at Griffith Oval with the first match kicking off at 9am. The one-day tournament will see Canberra clubs battle it out in hopes to claim the Capital 7s title in 2025. Pools are set up in a round robin format, before finals kick off at 3pm. With the action set to take over Griffith Oval for the entire day, it is shapes to be a great day out this Saturday. Uni-Norths Owls braved the wet and muddy conditions on Saturday as they took part in the Boorowa Rugby Festival. Despite the rain, the Women’s X, 3rd and 4th Grade, and Colts teams put in strong performances, making the most of the pre-season hit-out. The Women’s X side had a standout day, winning all three of their games. They executed their new structure effectively, showing impressive cohesion and attacking flair. Their dominant performance was a testament to their hard work in pre-season. 3rd and 4th Grade had a tough outing but showcased excellent defensive efforts. They lost one game and drew another, proving their resilience in challenging conditions. Their commitment in defence was a highlight, keeping opposition attacks at bay. The Colts teams played three tightly contested matches, finishing with one win, one draw, and one loss. Despite the mixed results, they impressed across all games, demonstrating skill and determination. The coaching staff were pleased with their overall performance and effort throughout the day. The festival provided valuable match experience for all teams, with plenty of positives to take into the season ahead. With strong defensive displays and promising attacking play, the Owls will look to build on this momentum as they continue their preparations.

he Uni-Norths Owls 3rd and 4th Grade squad took to the field at the 2025 Cowra 10s on Saturday, putting in a strong showing across four games in sweltering conditions. With temperatures soaring to 36 degrees, the team pushed through the heat to deliver some exciting rugby, showcasing skill, determination, and plenty of grit. The Owls kicked off the day with high energy, embracing the fast-paced, open style of 10s rugby. Over the course of four matches, they put in strong performances, testing themselves against some quality opposition. Despite their efforts, the team fell short in the quarter-finals, bringing their tournament campaign to a close. Despite the loss, the day was a great opportunity for the squad to build cohesion, gain valuable match experience, and enjoy some good rugby in a fun and competitive atmosphere. The Cowra 10s always proves to be a highlight of the pre-season calendar, and this year was no different. With the season fast approaching, the hit-out in Cowra will no doubt serve as a valuable stepping stone for the Owls' campaign ahead. The squad will take plenty of positives from the experience as they continue to prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season. Canberra were off a running again when they found themselves in space down the right touch line. Before shifting the ball back the opposite way for Johnston to collect his second of the day for a converted try, Royals pushing the lead out to 14-0. The Owls responded when they started to dominate the breakdown, giving them opportunities to put points on the board. Despite the increased possession and field territory, the Uni-Norths would head into halftime down 14-0. Royals outside centre Jason Swain got his team off to a flyer when he barged his way over to tick the score over to 21-0. The situation didn’t improve for the Owls when they lost a player to a red card for foul play. Canberra taking full advantage to increase their lead to 28-0 after Joel Penders added to the scoreboard. Johnson would grab his hat-trick when he strolled over down the left touch line putting the match to bed. The Eagles will have their work cut out for them as they look to prevent a back-to-back effort from the Vikings after falling to the Tuggeranong side in a one point thriller in the Qualification Final. Gungahlin would manage to get on the board first in the 7th minute after a crash play from Malakye Enasio would pay dividends, scoring under the posts making for an easy conversion for Sam McLachlan. Soon after, Gungahlin would score a similar try as Nathan Butt would also show his strength close to the line and barnstorm his way to a quick second try for Gungahlin. Tuggeranong number 9 Wally Wentzel would however score against the run of play as a Gungahlin backline shift on halfway would land in Wentzel's hands. Once he snatched the ball there was no doubt of him scoring Tuggeranong's first try of the day. Coming back out from the sheds Gungahlin's Kadin Pritchard would return with a point to prove once again as the fullback would find a break and a try purely through his lightning speed under the Tuggeranong sticks. Extending Gungahlin's lead once again would be Samuel Pack finding some space on the left side before wrapping around for yet another try under the posts. But it would be next Owl’s try that had the Uni-Norths fans on their feet when scrum half Anthony Luchetti booted the ball down field to regather and score. Story unable to convert Luchetti’s effort from out wide. The Lions came roaring back to life when they had an attack scrum a few metres out from the opposition try line. Though it would be the Owls who would respond shortly before the halftime siren after Wayne Seabrook burrowed his way over for a 22-12 halftime lead. Steadily mounting the pressure over Gungahlin, the Vikings would open the match with a 14-0 lead after 25 minutes as hooker Joel Leiper dove over in the fourth minute followed by skipper Seamus Smith in the 19th minute. At the death of the first half, Eagles scrumhalf would change the tides and nab his side a try of their own eventuating in just a seven point difference at the half. Gungahlin would then even the scoring almost immediately after leaving the sheds with a miraculous effort from winger Joe Sale sealing another try, converted by Day taking the score to 14-all. Vikings veteran Andrew Robinson would prove to be the difference for the next two tries for his side as the took the Tuggeranong total to 28 points. Tuggeranong advanced to the big dance with a comfortable 31-12 win over Gungahlin in the Qualification final, while Uni-Norths Owls moved on the hard way, leaving both the Royals and Eagles in their wake on the way to the decider. After 10 minutes of play both sides were locked at nil all as they went through a tough battle to gain any territory to create an attacking opportunity. The Vi-Queens would manage to get the first stint of meaningful field position after about 15 minutes of play, however the Uni-Norths defence proved too strong as they turned away the Tuggeranong side. The Vi-Queens would however find the first try after making their way back into Uni-Norths territory inside the last 10 minutes of the opening half. With a strong carry taking the ball out to the left, the ball would then be offloaded to Tijana Zdravevska for the opening try in the left corner. Extending their lead in the 30th minute would be the Vi-Queens through Siena Edwards after a slick shift through the midfield with a strong carry by Merania Paraone opening up the field for Tuggeranong's second try. On the verge of halftime a barnstorming Tabua Tuinakauvadra would put an exclamation mark on the Vi-Queens first half as the number eight barrelled her way through for a five pointer taking the score at the break to 15-0. Paraone went on to continue her standout performance as she then found a try early in the second half, due to her unstoppable running game. Uni-Norths did not have any room to breathe though with the Vikings crossing once again in the 46th minute through Susana Rogoyawa. Zdravevska would soon nab her second try of the match as the Vi-Queens continued their dominant streak as they edge close to a Premier 15s championship. With just over 15 minutes remaining in the match fullback Grace Tai managed to exploit another misfire of the Uni defence, resulting in the sides seventh try. With less than 10 minutes remaining, the Tuggeranong Women would really put their foot on Uni's throat as they found another try through Easter Savelio pouncing over the white stripe, converted by Siena Edwards the side now hold on to a 44-0 lead. The Vikings would open the scoring of the match in the eighth minute after a lineout within 22 of the Royals line was converted into points after hooker Samuel Thomas dove over the line in a rolling maul effort from Tuggaranong. Taking a chance at points early, Royals number nine Pedro Rolando opted for a penalty goal option in the 15th minute of the match to give the Royals their first points of the afternoon. Undeterred from Royals' first points, the Vikings would find another try in the 20th minute as a shift to the right hand side thanks to a bullet-pass from Tuggeranong 10 Ryan Lonergan found its man, resulting in a points to Shane Wilcox in the right corner. The 24th minute would be a huge one for the blue baggers however, with a strong rolling maul resulting in a penalty try to the side, and a yellow card to Vikings workhorse Baden Godfrey. Following the newfound points to Royals, the scoreline sat at 12-10 in Vikings favour. Evening the playing field soon after, Royals loosehead James Bundy also found his way alongside the timekeepers with a yellow card of his own. Tuggeranong would come off best after being a man down however, scoring the next try with eight minutes left on the clock as Darcy Swain managed to burrow his way under the Royals line defence and score, with Lonergan adding the extras off the boot. Just three minutes later Royals would get back to a two point deficit as Jarrah McLeod trampled through a one-on-one defensive effort and brought it around to score under the posts. Bringing the score to 19-17 the Vikings would remain up by two heading into the break. With eight minutes gone in the second half, the Royals would take the lead for the first time in the match after another strong maul paid dividends with Connal McInerney putting his name on the try-scoring effort. With 10 minutes left in the match, the score would remain 24-19 after both sides were struggling to gain any momentum to benefit them. With the ball travelling up and down the field, both Vikings and Royals had made some close escapes, however the ball mostly remained in between the two 22 lines. a real turning point in the match with seven minutes remaining, Tuggeranong number eight Justin Sikimeti would have his outing ended early from a yellow card after collecting Royals Andy Muirhead high in a tackle. A big shout out to the Uni Norths Owls 2022 Colts squad in its endeavour to bring home the Silverware to the Barn this weekend. The Owls South Australian supporters will be nervously awaiting the result and will celebrate long into the night from afar. Also a special mention to Owls club legend David Wright. David originally from the sporting Mecca of Wagga Wagga spent many seasons in the engine room with the Owls, many in first grade. David this weekend will be captaining the Mighty Barossa Rams in the Adelaide Rugby Union Grand Final against Burnside. Incidentally, Burnside are Max Bode old Club. Sorry Max your going down in this one. Congratulations to all Owls players, coaches, managers and supporters for contributing to yet another successful year for this truly outstanding and much loved Club.
